Flatulence can be an embarrassing subject which many people find uncomfortable to discuss, even with doctors or practitioners. However, flatulence can be very troublesome when it occurs annoyingly on a daily basis.

It is perfectly normal that gases are produced in the gut. These gases are absorbed by the body and then exhaled via the lungs. Flatulence is caused by the excessive production of decomposition gases. In order to protect ourselves from self-intoxication caused by these gases, the body emits them in the form of foul smelling and clearly audible flatulence via the intestine. Flatulence can be a symptom which points out that something is not right with the digestive tract.

Our gut flora processes and digests our food. Flatulence indicates an impaired gut flora (for example, an increase of gas-forming bacteria) which in turn indicates an imbalance in the digestive tract. This can cause poor digestion and a poor supply of nutrients to the body. Since a healthy gut flora makes up a big part of the immune system, an impairment of the gut flora can lead to a weakened immune system. In addition, the body (especially the liver) is burdened with putrefactive gases.

Flatulence can be caused by many different factors – often by particular dietary preferences: too many cereal products; a high fibre diet; too much protein; an unhealthy diet; eating too late at night; oversized portions; food intolerances (fructose, lactose, histamine and gluten intolerance); using sugar substitutes (sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol); stress; a weakened liver; chronic gut inflammation; and irritable bowel syndrome.

As flatulence occurs due to an imbalance of the gut, besides a clarification of the causes stated above, a gut flora analysis, as well as a subsequential gut sanitation should be taken into consideration.

The gut flora analysis examines how the bacteria living in the gut are built up, meaning which bacteria are populating the intestine. A gut flora analysis indicates whether the gut flora is intact or if the gut flora is being impaired. If the gut flora is impaired then microbiological compounds such as lactic acid bacteria or E.coli bacteria can be taken in order to reconstruct the gut flora.
