Who should take the test?

The complex interaction of food allergens, microorganisms, epithelium and immune system influences the development of many chronic diseases. Above all, a permeable intestinal mucosa – the leaky gut syndrome – plays a central role.

The protein molecule zonulin is a suitable marker to measure the permeability of the intestinal mucosa. Zonulin regulates the exchange of fluid, macromolecules and leukocytes between bloodstream and intestinal lumen. High zonulin values can typically be observed in case of Diabetes Type 1, autoimmune diseases, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic diseases.

The test analyzes the values of the following protein molecule:

  • Zonulin

Our Zonulin Test gives you information about the zonulin concentration in your gut. This value plays an important role in diagnosing the so called “Leaky Gut Syndrome”, as it gives an indication of the gut permeability.

How does it work?

You collect the samples at home, send them back to us and we will provide you with your level of each protein molecule and whether your level falls within the reference ranges for your age. In addition to that, the results include graphs showing whether your are in the “green” (=normal/healthy) or “red” (=too high/low) area, making it easy to understand the results.

What will my results tell me?

Your results will provide detailed information about whether your zonulin level is normal, low, or high compared to reference ranges in your age group. You can then discuss the results with your doctor or health practitioner, who can give you further guidance and treatment recommendations.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

We always recommend the discussion of the mailed results with your doctor or practitioner. Besides, further information is available on our website, especially in the different test categories, under “health conditions” and the FAQs. Still have questions? Test measures
For the Zonulin Test we analyse:
  • Zonulin
Zonulin

Zonulin is a protein molecule that helps with the regulation of tight junctions in your intestinal wall. When it connects to specific receptors on the cell surface, the tight junctions open up and therefore increase your intestinal permeability. This can be caused e.g. by being exposed to certain types of bacteria. The ensuing exposure to foreign antigens and cell components can cause immunological reactions and dysregulations. High Zonulin values can typically be observed in case of Diabetes Type 1, autoimmune diseases, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic diseases.

Symptoms
Symptoms the Zonulin Test is suitable for:
  • Chronic diseases
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Food intolerance
  • Inflammation
  • Diabetes Type 1
  • Celiac disease

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

What are the symptoms of a Leaky Gut?

The symptoms of the so-called "leaky gut" can be very different. In addition to gastrointestinal complaints, typical complaints include exhaustion, food intolerances, frequent infections, skin problems, depression or joint and muscle pain. In addition, there are often various deficiency symptoms in the long term because nutrients can no longer be properly absorbed.

What is the difference to the leaky gut test?

The zonulin test only measures the zonulin value. Although this suggests whether there is a permeable intestine, it cannot say anything about the underlying causes. The damaged intestinal mucosa is often accompanied by fungal infections or bacterial imbalances. In the leaky gut test, these factors are also checked so that the actual cause of the damanged mucosa can also be identified and treated properly.

Can a leaky gut be the cause of my rheumatoid arthritis?

With the leaky gut, the inflammatory values in the body increase. These increased inflammation values often lead to inflammatory diseases. Rheumatoid arthritis is also an inflammatory disease that can develop or get worse. It is therefore useful to clarify whether the source of the inflammation is in the intestine.

What are "tight junctions"?

Tight junctions are protein molecules that zip cells together. This creates a barrier and prevents unwanted substances from entering the body through the interstices. In the intestine, they prevent intruders such as bacteria or viruses from entering the body through the intestinal mucosa. An increased zonulin level indicates open tight junctions that can no longer perform this task.
