The pinworm (threadworm) test is a sticky tape test. By using an adhesive strip on a microscope slide, we check whether an infection with pinworms is present.

In our latitudes, infection with pinworms is the most common worm disease in humans. An infection with pinworms is often described as a children’s disease, although adults can be just as affected.

Who should take the test?

In our latitudes, infection with pinworms, also called threadworms, is the most common worm disease in humans. An infection with pinworms is often described as a children’s disease, although adults can be just as affected. The worms are very small and grow to only about 0.5- 1.3 cm in size. The eggs are not visible to the naked eye, but can be seen under a microscope. If worm eggs enter our body during an infection, they mature into sexually mature worms in the intestine. The males die after fertilization, while the females migrate through the body to the rectum and then lay their eggs in the so-called anal folds of the human body. This leads to a usually severe (nocturnal) itching.

How does it work?

If a pinworm infestation is suspected, a stool test is unfortunately not suitable for diagnosis, as the eggs are located in the skin and are not excreted in the stool. In this case, a sticky tape test is performed. For this purpose, a transparent adhesive strip is briefly pressed onto the anus before the morning toilet and then stuck onto a microscope slide. The slide is then sent in for examination.

It is important to use a transparent adhesive strip and not a matt one, otherwise an evaluation is not possible. Also, if possible, no fecal residues should adhere to the adhesive strip, as these also hinder an evaluation.

Test measures
For the Threadworm Test we analyze:
  • Threadworm
Threadworm/Pinworm

Enterobius vermicularis is a pinworm about one centimeter long whose only host is humans. The female worms migrate at night through the anal opening into the perianal region and lay their eggs there. Within a few hours, infective larvae hatch from these eggs. The strong itching caused by this leads to scratching, whereby many eggs can get under the fingernails and the surrounding area and thus spread even further.

Symptoms
Symptoms the Threadworm Test is suitable for:
  • Severe itching of the anus, especially at night
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Exhaustion, fatigue
  • Abdominal cramps

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

How many eggs do pinworms lay?

The female lays about 10,000 eggs in her average two- to six-week lifetime.

Does the test show an infestation immediately after infection?

No, the complete development cycle from egg to worm usually takes between 20 and 40 days.

Does the test check for other intestinal parasites?

No, for other intestinal parasites we recommend our parasite check. This is a stool test that can detect all parasites that release their eggs through the stool. The swab test, on the other hand, is specifically for pinworms.

How can you get infected?

Infection occurs through ingestion of the eggs or worms via infected feces. This can happen, for example, via infected soil or sand (such as the sandbox at the playground), shared toilets or toys. Young children are especially likely to be affected because they very often put things in their mouths. Worm eggs are also very robust and can survive outside the body for up to several weeks.
