Who should take the test?

Iron is mainly responsible for the vital transport of oxygen. With the help of iron, the oxygen absorbed via the lungs is bound to the blood pigment hemoglobin in the red blood cells (erythrocytes). In this way, the oxygen is distributed throughout the body to the individual cells to generate energy.

Women have twice the iron demand of men. The increased iron demand in women is caused in particular by menstruation, pregnancy and lactation.

In addition, vegans, vegetarians, athletes and people with intestinal problems that hinder the absorption of nutrients from food (e.g. celiac disease) are frequently affected by an iron deficiency.

The ferritin value indicates your iron status in your body and can help detect a deficiency early.

How does it work?

You collect the sample from the comfort of your home, send it to our lab and will receive the lab results, including dettailed information about your ferritin status.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

Your report will contain detailed information about your ferritin level and whether it is normal or too low (compared to the respective reference range for your age group). You can then discuss these results with your physician or practitioner, who can advise you on how to proceed and on the various therapy options.

Although we do not offer medical advice ourselves, we will gladly assist you in finding a suitable therapist in your area. Besides, further information is available on our website, especially in the different test categories, under “health conditions” and the FAQs. Still have questions? Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

Why are women particularly often affected by an iron deficiency?

The increased iron demand in women is caused in particular by menstruation, pregnancy and lactation.

What should the ferritin value be?

A ferritin value of 100-310 ng/ml indicates sufficiently filled iron stores.

Is it possible to have too much iron?

Yes! Only about 0.17 percent of all men suffer from anemia due to too little iron. In contrast, very many men actually have iron overload, i.e. too much iron in the blood. Possible causes for too high iron levels can be frequent blood transfusions, liver diseases or genetic causes. Rarely, a high iron level can also be caused by taking an iron supplement and thus supplying too much iron. Excess iron builds up in the body and increases the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Other possible symptoms of excess iron include joint pain, fatigue, weakness, and decreased interest in sex.

Which foods contain high amounts of iron?

Good sources of iron are, for example: liver, oatmeal and wheat bran, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, legumes, quinoa or pistachios.
