Who should take the test?

About 1 in 7 people in the United States who have HIV don’t know they have it. HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. No effective cure exists for HIV. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. Everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care, and more often if you do things that might increase your risk for getting HIV.

Some groups of people in the United States are more likely to get HIV than others because of many factors, including their sex partners, their risk behaviors, and where they live. If you were HIV-negative the last time you were tested, and that test was more than one year ago, and you answer yes to any of the following questions, you should get an HIV test as soon as possible.

These things increase your chances of getting the virus:

  • are you a man who has had sex with another man?
  • have you had sex (anal or vaginal) with an HIV-positive partner?
  • have you had more than one sex partner since your last HIV test?
  • have you injected drugs and shared needles with others?
  • have you exchanged sex for drugs or money?
  • have you been diagnosed with or sought treatment for another sexually transmitted disease?
  • have you been diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis or tuberculosis?
  • have you had sex with someone who could answer yes to any of the above questions or someone whose sexual history you don’t know?
How does it work?

You collect the sample (blood spot), send it back to us and we will provide you with information about your HIV status. If you test positive, you should talk to a doctor about treatment options to avoid passing an infection to a partner.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

After you get tested, it’s important for you to find out the result of your test so that you can talk to a doctor about treatment options if HIV was detected. Still have questions? Then you can contact us by mail at Please note that we reserve the right to collaborate with certified partner laboratories.

Test measures
For the HIV Test we analyze:
  • HIV

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is a blood-borne virus that can be transmitted through unprotected anal or vaginal sex and sharing HIV contaminated syringes. HIV weakens the immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection. There are varying symptoms of HIV depending upon the stage of disease. Most people with acute infection experience a short flu-like illness. After initial symptoms disappear, there is often a long, silent period of HIV infection before the disease progresses to AIDS. There is no cure to HIV, but early diagnosis allows for treatment with medication that can help to suppress levels of virus.

Symptoms the HIV Test is suitable for:
  • fever
  • fatigue and headache
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • joint and muscle pain
  • sore throat
  • night sweats

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

Why do most HIV infections occur when the carrier does not even yet know about their infection?

Two to four weeks after a fresh HIV infection, there are a particularly large number of viruses in the blood, since the virus reproduces very rapidly at the beginning. Most people do not yet know about their infection at this point and can therefore not warn their sex partners accordingly. That is why most of the transmissions take place in this phase.

Can I get HIV from injections lying around?

No. No case is known worldwide in which a person has been infected by a needle lying around, for example in a sandpit. Infections with hepatitis B and hepatitis C, however, are quite possible. In such a case, you should therefore definitely be examined by a doctor.
