With the Adiposity Index Test, your stool sample is examined to determine the ratio between the bacteroides and firmicutes bacteria.

A too high proportion of firmicutes can

  • contribute to obesity.
  • make losing weight considerably harder even with a healthy diet.

The laboratory test thus helps to identify weight problems caused by an intestinal imbalance.

Who should take the test?

Are you unhappy with your weight but having problems slimming down? Our body weight is not only influenced by life situations – organic processes also play an important role.

The two dominant groups of bacteria in the human gut are at 90% the bacteroides and firmicutes. An increasing number of studies confirms the connection between body weight and individual gut flora, in particular the ratio of firmicutes to bacteroides: The lower the proportion of firmicutes or the higher the proportion of bacteroides, the lower the body weight.

The test analyzes the values of the following analyte:

  • -Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio

Our Adiposity Index Test gives you information about the firmicutes/bacteroides ratio in your gut as this ratio impacts your food utilisation and your body weight.

How does it work?

You collect the samples at home, send them back to us and we will provide you with your level of each analyte and whether your level falls within the reference ranges for your age. In addition to that, the results include graphs showing whether your are in the “green” (=normal/healthy) or “red” (=too high/low) area, making it easy to understand the results.

What will my results tell me?

Your results will provide detailed information about whether your firmicutes/bacteroides ratio is normal, low, or high compared to reference ranges in your age group. You can then discuss the results with your doctor or health practitioner, who can give you further guidance and treatment recommendations.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

We always recommend the discussion of the mailed results with your doctor or practitioner. Besides, further information is available on our website, especially in the different test categories, under “health conditions” and the FAQs. Still have questions? Then you can contact us by phone at +44 (0)20 3286 6316 or mail at contact@verisana.co.uk.

Test measures
For the Adiposity Index Test we analyse:
  • Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio
Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio

The two dominant groups of bacteria in the human gut are at 90% the firmicutes and bacteroides. Many firmicutes produce endospores, which are resistant to desiccation and can survive extreme conditions. Bacteroides allows us to digest soluble fibre and make short chain fatty acids. Decreased bacteroides indicate a lowered resistence to pathogenic species (such as salmonella, shigella and clostridia). An increasing number of studies confirms the connection between body weight and individual gut flora, in particular the ratio of firmicutes to bacteroides: The lower the proportion of firmicutes or the higher the proportion of bacteroides, the lower the body weight.

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

Does nutrition affect the balance of bacteroides and firmicutes bacteria?

Yes. Imbalances often result from a low-fiber, high-fat diet. This form of nutrition contains little food for the Bacteroides bacteria, which therefore cannot reproduce well.

Do antibiotics lead to obesity?

Studies have indeed shown that people gain more weight after antibiotic therapy. After antibiotic therapy, a previously healthy intestinal flora needs at least 6 months to regenerate. People who are struggling with intestinal problems anyway often keep a permanent imbalance as long as the intestine is not rebuilt with probiotics.
