Premenstrual syndrome

 Does this sound familiar?

  • Back and abdominal pains
  • Migranes
  • Irritability, mood swings
  • Depressive moods
  • Constant fatigue, sleeping disorders
  • Water retention, weight fluctuations
  • Swollen and sensitive breasts
  • Nausea or food cravings
  • Acne

These are some of the symptoms of PMS, caused by hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle. Verisana measures the levels of the hormones important for the cycle.

For many women, it is not the period itself but rather the days beforehand that can cause physical and/or psychological discomforts. This is known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), from which an estimated 50% of all woman are affected, to different extents – according to various scientific studies, about 5% of the women who suffer from PMS tend to be so badly affected during this period, that they are often confined to bed. These cases are referred to as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), which is acknowledged as a medical condition.

Hormonal fluctuations influence the body and mind

The typical complaints of PMS normally arise in the time between the 14th and 28th day of the menstrual cycle (around 1-2 weeks before menstrual bleeding) and disappear with the onset of menstruation. This is because the majority of the symptoms associated with PMS, as well as PMDD, are often the result of hormonal imbalances in the body. Amongst others, the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone are primarily involved. Progesterone and oestrogen regulate the menstrual cycle. In women who do not suffer from PMS, progesterone levels continually increase after ovulation until the last day of the cycle (the beginning of menstruation), whereas the oestrogen levels drop during this time..

The interaction between progesterone and oestrogen is exactly coordinated, if this balance is destroyed, for example if too little or too much of progesterone or oestrogen is being produced, then this can cause PMS.

The test results of most women suffering from PMS show a low progesterone level. If a low progesterone level is determined it can be balanced out, upon consultation with your doctor, by using bio-identical progesterone creams or capsules, for example. Progesterone creams and capsules are available from most pharmacies.

How Verisana can help

If you are suffering from one or more of the symptoms stated above, we recommend a Verisana saliva test on the 19th , 20th or 21st day of your cycle (in the case of a 28 day cycle), to determine the progesterone and oestrogen values.* The sample needed can be easily obtained by yourself at home. The evaluation report is then sent in the post along with:

Your hormone values in graphical form – making it quickly possible to determine whether your progesterone and oestrogen values are within the reference range and how the values are connected with one another.

  • An easy to understand explanation regarding the functions of the tested hormones.
  • A summary of the complaints that can come from a deficiency or excess.

*for the oestrogen determination oestradiol is measured; oestradiol is a hormone belonging to the oestrogen family.
